Sri Lanka - Negombo

A last minute weekend getaway trip to Sri Lanka ended up leaving quite an impression on us.  Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with so much to see.  Due to lack of infrastructure it takes a LONG time to get from place to place but so worth it to see some of the amazing sites.  We spent one day at the beach and the rest of the time in the Central (mountain/jungle) region of the island.

Negombo beach (west coast) is one of the closest beach towns to the airport which made sense for us due to our late night arrival.  I have heard that the beaches on the east coast and in the south are SO much prettier than places like Negombo beach.  I found Negombo so beautiful I can't imagine what the other beaches must be like!

There was hardly anyone around - it seriously felt as if I had the entire beach to myself.  I just couldn't figure out how such a stunning place could be so deserted...perhaps everyone decided to go south to the beach.

In the past Negombo beach was used by the Portuguese, Dutch and British as main export harbor for cinnamon.  Now it is mostly a resort and fishing town.  The fisherman still use the old world fishing crafts like outrigger canoes and catamarans to catch a wide variety of marine fishes like seers, skipjacks, lobster and prawn.
