China - Fountain Fish (Lunch)

On our first day in China we met up with our friend Jessie and her boyfriend Tien Huo to hike a beautiful secret section of the Great Wall.  It took about 2 hours to get out of Beijing and to the main town closest to the secret section of the Great Wall.  The town was quaint and beautiful so we stopped for lunch before our big hike. The restaurant was called Lucky and initially looked very promising.

Beautiful Horses outside...

Scenic dinning area by the river...

All utensils in plastic wrap to ensure proper sanitation...

A beautiful waterfall teaming with fish...

The trouble started when we began ordering.  Jessie explained that the restaurant was known for their fish so naturally thats what we ordered. Then the waitress asked Kingsley and Tien Huo to follow her to pick out our fish.  Even this didn't startle me as we have often been in restaurants and shown our seafood prior to cooking to ensure the utmost freshness.  This was a slightly different experience...

Lets just say Kingsley returned to the table (ever so slightly) traumatized by the experience. Our fish, "Unlucky", was the last item to arrive on the table and we were all pretty full by the time he arrived but Kingsley was determined to eat every ounce of that poor fish so it had not suffered and died in vain.  I was blissfully unaware of the whole thing till much later and for that I am thankful.

Last pit stop before the hike.

Bellies full from lunch and "Unlucky" we drove another 30 minutes outside of the main town to arrived at a tiny village to meet our guide and start our hike.
