Vietnam - Halong Bay- Fishing Village
On a second day exploring the islands we visited a floating fishing village. There are about 3000 people who live around the islands of Halong Bay. Most live in small floating fishing villages, some still live in caves or on their fishing boat. The benefit of being a part of a larger fishing village is that there is some kind of schooling available to the children.
Dogs and cats in the village are trained to dive into the water after fish for their owners. How they get cats to dive willingly into water is beyond me!
Its a half day boat ride to the nearest town so the villages are pretty remote. There are doctors that visit each village once a month but typically if someone is sick they are given herbal treatments gathered from the islands and the sea. The village we visited was called the Cong Dam Fishing Village and had 34 families living in it which is one of the bigger ones. Most villages have between 4-8 families.

In the photo above you can see a cat perched on the rock looking into the water.
From the village we went to a beautiful lagoon where we tried the Vietnamese style of rowing the boat. Not as easy as it looks! In the photo above Kingsley is spinning us in circles. In the photo below I am rowing as hard as I can and the boat is not moving.
I am pretty sure you just needed me to help you with the rowing :) Looks like you guys had TONS of fun :) Rebecca
So interesting. Such a different world.
Rebecca- I can only imagine the trouble we would get into if it was just you and I rowing the boat! I still don't know how we managed to tip over that row boat all those years ago!!
So interesting and different! Hope Shaun and I can visit someday.
