New Zealand - Kaikoura
The first stop on our campervan road-trip was Kaikoura a small town on the northeastern part of the South island.
Kaikoura is located on a narrow coastal plain between high mountains and the Pacific Ocean. In many places along the coast you can see how the mountains drop almost straight into the sea. The steepness of the mountains is a reflection of the underwater geography which causes the ocean around Kaikoura to be rich in sea life and attracts seals, dolphins and whales.
I had a ball pretending I was a genuine pioneer woman while making our cookstove breakfast of scrambled eggs and tomatoes. We enjoyed our first breakfast in New Zealand overlooking the ocean while a pod of dolphins quietly swam by. It doesnt really get much better than that!
Goose Bay coastal campgrounds is where we stayed in Kaikoura. At $30 per night for the campsite we got an impressively stunning private campsite right on the ocean with our own seal colony just steps from the campervan. The showers and toilets were also spotlessly clean. My first shower in New Zealand was an icy cold disaster but I soon figured out (its actually very simple) how to activate the hot water in the campsite showers.
In Maori, kai means "eat" and koura is "crayfish' (rock lobster). And Kaikoura is certainly the place to eat crayfish! One of our favorite stops was at Nins Bin - a shack along the beach where they serve only whatever was freshly caught that day.

Beautiful sunsets

Look carefully behind us and you can see snoozing fur seals.

Lunch break of lobster and mussels at a picnic table on the beach - a little piece of heave!
